Next stop, sunny Florida

Taking a break from the sunshine and sand, the CPA and I ventured into Gator Country to watch the Ohio State basketball team upend No. 7 Notre Dame yesterday.

The establishment we settled on was called Jack Flats, and it featured no fewer than 12 mancaveesque projector screens and nearly as many flat screens, all but three of which showed the Florida-Alabama game. I guess they wanted to make sure everyone had a view!

No worries, as the owner-manager was nice enough to offer a good table with a clear view of a 37-inch Vizio upon which he agreed to put the OSU game. We would’ve had a much bigger flat screen, but a group of old ladies had shown up and requested the Kentucky basketball game, which started a full two hours later!

The biggest thing that struck me about the OSU-Notre Dame game was the athleticism the Buckeyes had compared to the slower, stiffer Irish. The Buckeyes came off a first half against Miami earlier in the week where they looked completely outclassed, only to come back and defeat the Hurricanes.

This time around it was OSU that had the horses, including a Secretariat-like effort by sophomore Evan Turner. I think he’s the go-to guy and he’s proving it, especially with 28 points and 10 rebounds against Notre Dame, even posting his wiry 6-7 frame up against All-American post man Luke Harangody, drawing a foul.

I’m really excited about this team and, even though I’m sure there will be some growing pains, this should be a great season.
