Another No. 10 for the Heisman?

After my man Brian opened the door, I felt an urge to jump in the Heisman conversation.

Here’s how Brian sees the race:

1. Dennis Dixon, QB Oregon
2. Darren McFadden, RB Arkansas
3. Tim Tebow, QB Florida
4. Sam Bradford, QB Oklahaoma
5. James Laurinaitis, LB Ohio State

James Laurinaitis

I definitely agree with Brian’s top guy. In my opinion, the discussion starts and ends with Dixon. In another year, with candidates from more mainstream locales, I might not think he’d have a chance, but Dixon is so smooth. He came to Michigan and dominated in one of that team up north’s most desperate hours.

Dixon does what two other No. 10s did before him. Vince Young and Troy Smith could both get the job done on the ground and that’s where their foundation was. But each of those three guys made the biggest strides when they began going to the air with success.

Young didn’t win the Heisman — he finished behind Reggie Bush, but took out his frustration on USC in the national championship game — but Smith did and I think Dixon is next.

When Dixon throws the ball it looks effortless and if it weren’t for an instant replay decision against Cal, the Ducks would be undefeated and ahead of Ohio State in the polls.

If the Buckeyes are to advance to the national title game I think it’ll be Oregon, and not LSU or any other team, that will be their opponent, and Dixon will be tough to run down.

As for the other players on Brian’s list, I think they’re all solid players, but each of them has major drawbacks. McFadden and Tebow are on teams with multiple losses, and Bradford just hasn’t made a name for himself yet. Laurinaitis won’t sniff the award because of the fact he’s a defensive player, although he is the best player on what has been the best team. Todd Boeckman or Chris Wells have a better chance at the award.

It’s definitely a strange year in college football. None of the top teams have an offensive player who competed on a high level prior to this season, meaning no one was already established in the voters’ consciousness. If Mike Hart were healthy all year, and his team hadn’t lost to a high school team to start the season, he might be in the running.

McFadden’s numbers are great, but his stud quarterback transferred because his Daddy didn’t like the play calling at Arkansas, making the offense so one-dimensional even John Cooper would know what’s coming.

So who else are you going to give it to, Colt Brennan? I doubt it.

Dixon is the guy and frankly I’ll be surprised if anyone else wins the award. It is curious, however, that Oregon, the school that is in bed with Nike more than any other, and has campaigned for these awards over and over, hasn’t really done much for Dixon.

I’m happy to report that with a solid week of picking I ended up on top again. Funny how this is at least the third time I’ve won a week and yet there I am down near the basement!

I would prefer to have no Buckeyes win any awards or attend any banquets between the Michigan game and the bowl game. As long as the banquets don’t have All-U-Can-Eat Buffets it might be okay.

Well. Well. Well. I search Google for Ohio State Buckeyes and look what I came up with!!! How’s it going guys? Seth, love your site. Although I personally don’t like the Bengals or the Reds – this Buckeyes fan will revisit often. As for the Heisman race, I had Dixon as my No. 1 the whole season – even before they kicked Michigan’s ass. Well, that’s it. Check out my blog! Hope all is well.
