My local daily newspaper ran a column this week comparing the Cleveland Indians’ seven-game loss to the Boston Red Sox to Ohio State’s loss to Florida in the football national championship.
The point was to try to impress upon non-Tribe fans what the loss felt like to supporters of the team, but the only real comparison is the fact both teams lost.
The Buckeyes were a decided favorite from Day 1, dominating the regular season, and beating Michigan in a shootout. There wasn’t any doubt OSU belonged in the title game. It was expected to be there.
Cleveland spent the first part of the season looking up at the Detroit Tigers in the standings and, after overtaking the Tigers in July, still struggled offensively deep into August, only keeping hold of the division at times because the teams below in the standings were worse.
The Buckeyes entered the game with Florida with a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and an offense that had played great all year. The defense, having only been touched in the Michigan game, seemed to be great, too.
The Red Sox are more comparable to the Buckeyes in this equation, with the exception being that, in the end, they won the ALCS, whereas the Bucks failed to even compete in the title game.
The pain of losing in the postseason is obviously very real, and it’s something fans have trouble dealing with, but once the Tribe lost to Boston the common feeling wasn’t shock. I, and other Buckeye fans, spent much of the winter overcoming the Florida loss. A numbness overtook us about halfway through the first quarter of that game, and it was nothing like losing in seven games to the Red Sox.
